George Catlin, Wounded Buffalo Bull Surrounded by White Wolves, 1832-33

From the Smithsonian American Art Museum:

George Catlin sketched this scene on the Upper Missouri River in 1832. While he insisted that his images were accurate documents of what he saw, it is clear that Catlin’s artistic eye led him to edit his compositions. Here he chose to position the buffalo so that its rounded form echoes the hills in the distance.

Catlin was horrified at what the wolves had done to the bull, noting that the animal’s eyes “were entirely eaten out of his head—-the grizzle of his nose was mostly gone—-his tongue was half eaten off, and the skin and flesh of his legs torn almost literally into strings. In this tattered and torn condition, the poor old veteran stood bracing up in the midst of his devourers …”

This is a really, really, really great compendium of DFW stuff (his writing, other’s writing on him, notes, interviews, videos, etc) that is basically perfect for anybody out there who considers themselves a DFW dummy, but would like a good place to start knowing more about this fearlessly brilliant writer and man.

Also, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN FIFTY TODAY.

On Monday, Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin) had a radio interview on “Q with Jian Ghomeshi,” where she spoke about the importance of public mistakes, the resurgence of the ‘90s, and why she is still pissed off twenty years later (“Does anybody remember that the Equal Rights Amendment never passed?”).

In the wake of the reissue of Bikini Kill’s entire catalog, Hanna speaks a lot about the band’s goals, such as encouraging girls to get out and make their own music.
